Anyone looking for an engagement ring will come across prices ranging from a few hundred to tens of thousands of euros. But how much does an engagement ring really cost? There is no single “right” amount. The price is mainly determined by the diamond, its quality, the design and the way the jewellery is sold.
At Diamond House Jewellery, we believe it is more important to understand what you are paying for than to follow a fixed spending rule. That is why we explain how the price of an engagement ring is built up in 2026.
How much does an engagement ring cost on average?
An average price does not tell you very much when it comes to engagement rings. The centre diamond alone can cost anywhere from a few hundred to many thousands of euros.
You can see that difference clearly in our diamond inventory. A natural round diamond weighing 0.25 carats, with H colour and VVS2 clarity, currently costs just over €300 including Belgian VAT. A natural diamond of around 1 carat can cost approximately €2,400 to €4,600 including VAT, depending on factors such as colour and clarity. The cost of the ring setting is then added on top.
These figures should not be seen as a fixed price list. Diamond prices fluctuate in response to international market prices and exchange rates.
What determines the price of an engagement ring?
With a diamond engagement ring, the largest part of the budget usually goes towards the centre diamond. Its value is largely determined by the 4Cs: carat, colour, clarity and cut.
Carat refers to weight. A larger diamond is usually more expensive, but prices do not increase in a straight line. A 1-carat diamond can cost considerably more per carat than a 0.70-carat stone.
Colour and clarity also affect the price. The highest grades are rarer and therefore more expensive, even though the visual differences can sometimes be barely noticeable to the naked eye. Choosing a slightly lower colour or clarity grade can therefore produce almost the same visual result for less money.
Cut quality is equally important. A well-cut diamond reflects light more effectively and can therefore appear brighter and more lively. Comparing diamonds by carat weight alone gives an incomplete picture.
You are also paying for the precious metal, the setting and the craftsmanship. A classic solitaire ring is generally simpler than a design featuring pavé, a halo, side stones or full bespoke work.

Do you really need to spend two months’ salary?
No. The well-known rule that an engagement ring should cost around two months’ salary is not a financial standard.
It is far better to decide on an amount that feels comfortable for you. An engagement ring should never be a reason to make financially unwise choices. With a clear budget, a diamond specialist can help you find the best balance of size, appearance and quality.
Why do similar-looking rings sometimes cost much more?
Two engagement rings that look almost identical can still differ significantly in price. That is not only due to diamond quality. Brand name, retail overheads, marketing, stockholding, intermediaries and margins can all play a role.
Diamond House Jewellery buys directly from manufacturers and diamond cutters in Antwerp and sells independently certified diamonds. Diamonds from 0.35 carats upwards are supplied with internationally recognised reports, for example from GIA, HRD or IGI.
The advantage of buying in Antwerp’s diamond district is therefore not simply that it is “cheap”. The real benefit is transparency: you can relate the price directly to the specific characteristics of the diamond and its independent certificate.

How can you get the most from your budget?
Do not start by asking how many carats you can buy at most. First decide what matters most to you: size, sparkle, shape or a particular design.
A diamond just below a popular weight threshold, for example 0.90 instead of 1.00 carat, can be an interesting option. You also do not automatically need the highest colour and clarity grades. An eye-clean diamond with excellent cut quality may look more attractive than a more expensive stone with stronger grades on paper but a less impressive cut.
Always look at the complete 4Cs and the certificate, rather than focusing on carat weight alone.
What is a good budget for your engagement ring?
The best budget is the amount that gives you the look you want without making you pay extra for characteristics you can barely see or simply do not value. At Diamond House Jewellery, you can choose from existing engagement rings or have a bespoke ring created by our in-house team of designers and goldsmiths.
For example, if you have €1,500, €3,000 or €5,000 to spend, we can show you which choices make the biggest difference to the overall appearance within that budget. That way, you know in advance where your money is going and can choose based on diamond quality, craftsmanship and personal preference.
